Na segunda semana da primavera, continuamos a explorar a relação entre infância e morte com um filme considerado obra-prima do cinema espanhol dos anos 70: El espíritu de la colmena (O Espírito da Colmeia) de Victor Erice. Filmado em 1963 nos últimos anos da ditadura de Francisco Franco (que durou quase quatro décadas), o diretor usa técnicas de alegoria frequentemente utilizadas por cinegrafistas para divulgar mensagens políticas em tempos de opressão criando um mundo enigmático em uma aldeia remota nos anos 40 (logo depois da guerra civil e início do governo Franco). É pelos olhos da menina Ana que observamos a família e o mundo ao redor dela: o pai obcecado com suas colmeias (a vida das abelhas na colmeia sendo uma alegoria para a vida em um regime autoritário - produtivas até a morte em uma ordem pré-definida, sem alegria, sem a possibilidade de escolhas individuais); a mãe jovem com uma fixação por um namorado imaginário; e Isabel, sua irmã e única companheira. As duas crianças assistem o filme Frankenstein com Boris Karloff de 1931 em um cinema itinerante visitando a aldeia, e a pequena Ana fica obcecada com o filme e o monstro, que acidentalmente mata uma menina igual a ela no filme. Em planos de longa duração com poucos diálogos, o filme cria uma atmosfera intensa sobre a inocência resultando num filme tanto lindo como emocionante: uma viagem nostálgica explorando a possibilidade de exílio interior da vida que nos cerca: uma referência forte aos nossos tempos assustadores. 


In the second week of our spring of life program we continue visiting the relationship between childhood and death with a film that is considered to be the masterwork of Spanish cinema from the Seventies: El espíritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive) by Victor Erice. Shot in 1973, in the last years of Franco’s nearly 40 years of dictatorship, the film uses techniques of allegory often utilized by  filmmakers to spread political comments in times of repression, creating an enigmatic world in a remote village in the Forties, shortly after the beginning of Franco’s government. It is through the eyes of the little girl Ana that we observe her family and the world around her: the father obsessed with his beehives (the life of bees being an allegory for the life in an authoritarian regime, working for the sake of the queen in a pregiven order until they die, no fun, no individual choices), the younger mother with a fixation for an imagined lover and Isabel, her sister and only companion. The two girls watch the 1931 film Frankenstein featuring Boris Karloff in an itinerant cinema visiting their village, and little Ana can not get out of the impression the film and the monster makes on her, the monster, who unwilingly killy a little girl just like herself. In long shots with little dialogue, the director creates an intense atmosphere about innocence resulting in a film that is as beautiful as intense: a nostalgic trip exploring the possibility to run away from the life that surrounds us: a strong reference in scary times.
