Estrelado por Malcolm McDowell (que dois anos depois ganhou reconhecimento mundial no papel de Alex na Laranja Mecânica do Stanley Kubrick) como Mike, um estudante numa escola de elite com regras duras definidas pela sociedade de classe, a direção da escola e as hieraquias entre várias turmas de alunos. Situado no caminho entre Zero de conduite (Zero de conduta) de Jean Vigo (1933) e Elephant de Gus van Sant (2003), a viôlencia apresentada na cena final de If… é claramente alegórico.
