Punctually at the beginning of the southern spring, accompanied by an infernal heat, begins our new film season gazing at the spring of human life: childhood and youth. As smooth and incalculable as the season of blossoming and fertility, this phase of life continues to have high cultural importance, as shows our eclectic selection approaching the subject in very different ways. As always, we start the new journey with a Brazilian classic: Pixote: The Law of the Weakest by Hector Babenco. Heavily inspired by Italian Neorealism, a movement that grew in Italy as a counterpoint to the eclectic abundance of fascism, the almost documentary film follows the struggle of the boy Pixote and his friends in the cruel streets of São Paulo. Surrounded by a complex and powerful violence, they live a life already lost by definition. In view of this, it is tragic but not unexpected that Fernando Ramos da Silva, the young actor who 'lived' the Pixote character in the film, was murdered by the military police under uncleared circumstances, as did two of his brothers, his nephew and his uncle. An incomparable monument to the Pixotes of this city, who continue to live and die among us, in a vicious circle that he now wants to accelerate by granting individual amnesty to policemen convicted of murder.
